Invented by Harry Campbell, the Campbell Balancer is a diagnostic tool for establishing the ideal fore/aft positioning of your ski bindings. Here’s an extract from the Campbell Balancer patent that explains it best:

“Currently, the positioning of ski boot bindings on alpine skis is determined by aligning a ski boot mid-sole mark indicative of the midpoint of the boot sole with a ski manufacturer's prescribed mounting mark on the surface of the ski. The mounting mark is typically a predetermined point which is generally determined by the manufacturer using statistical averages. Such a positioning system is ineffective for skiers whose physiology differs significantly from the statistical averages. More importantly, the prior art systems are not capable of dealing with individual variations in a person's flex, stance and balance. Such individual variations are significant. In particular, there is a substantial physiological difference in the flex, stance and balance characteristics of men and women which ought to be taken into account in the positioning of bindings on skis in order to enhance skier comfort, safety and efficiency for a particular skier. Use of the present standards for aligning the boots and bindings on skis by utilizing the manufacturer's mid-sole mounting points typically positions many skiers, and particularly women, too far back on their skis. The deviation from a neutral dynamic balance point is often found to be several centimetres. Skiers positioned too far back or forward on their skis are not able to turn their skis as effectively and efficiently as skiers properly positioned at a dynamically neutral balance position on the skis who, therefore, have adequate control over the operation of the skis."

It only costs £25.00 to have your ideal balance position diagnosed.

Note that the analysis is only accurate for conventional full camber skis (like race skis) and is not suitable for skis that are heavily rockered.

Wintersteiger Skitronic Plus Binding Testing Machine - reduced

Mechanical devices, like ski bindings, can deteriorate over time with wear and age which is why the manufacturers recommend that they’re tested annually.

Not only is it important to have them tested to ensure that they release correctly but it’s also important that the reading on the DIN scale really is the value that they release on.

Jon has one of only a few ski binding torque testing machines in the UK (a Wintersteiger Skitronic Plus c/w the latest wide ski clamps & the latest software release) and it only costs £30 to have your bindings checked.

Jon offers various specifications off hand tuning for your skis or snowboard as detailed below.

Unlike the majority of stores we do not just blindly machine grind the ski/board bases & edges which results in excessive & unnecessary material removal.

All work on skis is preceded by a visual binding check & tightening of the mounting screws if necessary. Snowboard bindings to be removed by customer prior to drop off. Prices apply to both skis and snowboards. Specialist waxes (ie dry slope, indoor snow or race etc) can be substituted upon request.

PRICES FROM 1st APRIL 2024

PLEASE ALLOW A MINIMUM OF A WEEK TURNAROUND.

STANDARD TUNE- £38.00: Remove skiing burrs/rock dings, sharpen edges to factory or specified angles, polish & remove the hanging burr. Brass brush to clean structure, hand hot wax with Dominator Zoom Lime universal wax, cool & scrape, clean/polish structure with brass, nylon & horsehair brushes. Apply Zardoz Notwax teflon overlay.

STANDARD TUNE c/w HOTBOX - £50.00: As above but includes a 4 hour hotbox treatment for greatly increased wax penetration.

BASE GRIND
- £20.00: Grind base(s) on RoffB base machine with various grades of silicon carbide belts to ensure flatness & to add base structure. This process will only be done when necessary as it reduces base thickness. Your skis/board will be assessed by Jon upon delivery as to whether a base grind is required.

EDGE TUNE ONLY
- £19.00: Remove skiing burrs/rock dings, sharpen edges to factory or specified angles, polish & remove the hanging burr.

WAX ONLY - £19.00: Brass brush to clean structure, hand hot wax with Dominator Zoom Lime universal wax, cool & scrape, clean/polish structure with brass, horsehair & nylon brushes. Apply Zardoz Notwax teflon overlay.

HOT SCRAPE BASE CLEAN

Brass brush to clean structure, hand hot wax with SKS storage wax and leave unscraped. Recommended for skis/boards that are stored in either damp (ie basement) or hot (ie lofts) areas.

PRE-SEASON TUNE (on End Of Season tuned skis) - £27.00: Scrape base to remove storage wax, brass brush to open structure, hot wax with Dominator Zoom Lime universal wax, cool & scrape, polish with brass, horsehair & nylon brushes. Apply Zardoz Notwax teflon overlay.

NEW SKIS / BOARD BASE PREP - £31.00: Hand hot wax/scrape base to clean, brass brush to open the structure, hand hot wax with Dominator Zoom Lime universal wax, cool & scrape, polish with brass, horsehair & nylon brushes. Apply Zardoz Notwax teflon overlay.
+ £12.00 to add a 4 hour hotbox treatment for greatly increased wax penetration.

RACE SKIS OR PREMIER NEW SKIS / BOARD BASE PREP - £43.00: Hand hot wax/scrape base to clean, brass brush to open the structure, hot wax with DominatorZoom Base Renew wax, cool & scrape, steel brush, hand hot wax with Dominator Zoom Lime universal wax, cool & scrape, polish with brass, horsehair & nylon brushes. Apply Zardoz Notwax teflon overlay. + £12.00 to add a 1 x 4 hour hotbox treatment (usually with the Zoom Lime) or
+ £24.00 to add a 2 x 4 hour hotbox treatments for the ultimate in wax penetration.

SIDEWALL REMOVAL: FOC if required during a standard or edge only tune, otherwise £12.00

RESET EXISTING SIDE EDGE ANGLE - £15.00: Choice of either 1, 2 or 3 degrees. Existing angle can either be increased or decreased.

RESET EXISTING BASE EDGE ANGLE - £15.00: Choice of 0.5, 0.7 or 1.0 degree. Note: The base edge angles can only be increased. To reduce the base edge angle a base grind is first required at £20.00
